We began with introductions and summaries of the efforts our respective organizations were making to reduce the environmental impacts resulting from our transportation activities. The partnership directly impacts more than 2,770 vehicles, 18,000 employees and 58,000 students. Therefore our efforts with regard to transportation have the potential to have a strong positive impact on the air quality and congestion problems in our region. Following the summaries of our current efforts we brainstormed possible collaborative projects for this team. These included:
A bio diesel buying cooperative to reduce prices for each partner
Promoting and expanding the use of bio diesel by all partners and pushing for higher percentages (ex. B50 vs. B10). This might also include requiring contractors to use biodeisel in equipment during construction projects. It was mentioned that this could be included as a requirement in the Request For Bids stage of the construction project.
Encourage the use of hybrids by the motor pools and or employees of each partner organization.
An ambassador program that connects students from UK with students from FCPS and officials from Lextran to promote student use and understanding of this public transportation option.
Possibly pool advertising funds from each of the partners to develop a general public service style campaign that promotes alternative and environmentally friendlier modes of transportation.
It was determined that Stuart Kearns from UK will be transportation team leader, Shane Tedder will assist with meeting minutes and other logistical tasks and individuals will be selected to head up the individual projects once they are determined.
